Former Premier League goalkeeper Mark Schwarzer said Arsenals Carabao Cup exit at West Ham is a “bitter blow” for Aaron Ramsdale.
After losing his place to David Raya for Premier League and Champions League games, Ramsdale is currently only favoured for domestic cup competitions.
Schwarzer told BBC Radio 5 Lives Football Daily: “For him psychologically it’s a big blow. That’s the hard thing for him.
“To really process that in his head, then to get his head around training every day, trying to make sure he stays as match fit as he possibly can and waiting for opportunities to play in cup competitions. Now there is one cup competition less for him to play in and that will be a bitter blow for him.
“It will be interesting moving forward to see how that goes. It was a night where I wouldn’t say he didn’t play well, but I wouldn’t say he had a great game. There was no Arsenal player that you could come out and say he did really well.”
Schwarzer put the result down to Mikel Arteta being out-thought tactically by David Moyes.
“They [West Ham] were definitely the better side. David Moyes did a great job on his tactics,” Schwarzer said.
“They were up for it and right from the beginning they just closed Arsenal down. They knew Arsenal wanted to play out and try to play through them but it didn’t work with West Ham. They forced errors.
“At times Arsenal looked jittery and that was mostly down to the fact that West Ham were so good on the front foot putting them under so much pressure.”
